Honestly, I just started using LinkedIn. I was very intimidated when creating my first post because I knew that it was a more formal and professional social network, and I still get nervous when clicking post. So, I was not shocked when I found out that the most active age range on the platform is 25-34-year-olds. However, I was stunned to hear that it is barely in the top 20 most popular social platforms, sitting at number 18. If I were to have guessed, I would have said at least in the top ten!
Even though I am a new user of the app, I would say that the average time per month being 17 minutes adds up pretty well. I would say it takes close to about five minutes to create a thoughtful post, and a post a week is about accurate. Meaning, between 15-20 minutes on average makes total sense.
Something I found interesting is the LinkedIn algorithm. The algorithm is unique in that it connects you with people you may know, instantly. Not only does it do a phenomenal job at that, but it also takes your engagement into account. For example, I joined the PRSSA LinkedIn group and within minutes, fellow PRSSA members were suggested for me to connect with. The technology that makes that possible is remarkable and a total game changer for networking opportunities. Some advice on maximizing the potential of the algorithm include, being relevant, but not too broad, posting things that encourage engagement, tag brand and of course using hashtags.
There are also many other ways to optimize the reach and the platform. Keeping posts short, being creative, posting consistently, joining groups, connect or follow experts in your field, following influencers and using carousel images, are just a few of the best ways to make sure that your LinkedIn profile is as helpful as possible.
I just want to take a second and say that if you have not really started or done all of the things I mentioned, it is OK! I am so grateful that Northern offers a course for career planning. Dr. Lambdin is amazing and has an entire assignment dedicated to this platform. From learning where you should start with your connections to becoming comfortable with posts, this assignment truly is so beneficial. I am so glad that I was able to learn all of these things as part of a class and did not have to figure it all out on my own! Below is a photo featured in my last LinkedIn post!
It is awesome to see more people around my age getting involved on LinkedIn! It makes me feel more belonging on the platform, as I'm sure it does for others too. The LinkedIn algorithm really interested me too. By recommending people you know almost instantly, helps tremendously.
